CONWAY LAD RUBS OUT HIS ‘GREEN’ DEMONS AT HADFIELD

Reports The Rickster from Woolyback Country

Pete Conway takes the North Derbyshire Merit Title despite being drawn against a Derbyshire County bowler in each of his games on finals night.

PC has now confirmed to this reporter that Hadfield is indeed a wonderful green (as he has been told many times before) and he must have been mistaken all these years………..

On an unusually chilly night in Hadfield the pick of the Qtr Finals saw team mates Pete and J P Hall battling out a great game that was just edged to 18 by Pete.

In the other Qtr Finals Nigel Armstrong probably the favourite on the night due to his years playing at Hadfield had no problems winning to 9.  Mick Coram and Paul Hawker also came through their matches.

In the Semi Pete took on Nigel in what was anticipated to be a close fought game but Nigel played as if he had never seen the green before (or maybe a bowl either according to his wife!) and that coupled with Pete putting in another solid performance saw a win to 10 on the card.

In the other semi Hawker seemed to be in control by the middle of the match but Coram fought back to put the pressure on.  Hawker eventually wrapping it up to 16.

So the final saw the 2 county colleagues lined up for what proved a fascinating match that Pete took control of with some excellent corner bowling.  Paul was hanging on in the game by virtue of some great saving bowls but it was looking increasingly bleak for him until the heavens opened.

With the rain Paul got the jack back and Pete struggled to prevent a charge from Paul who went from 19-11 down to be lying 2 in the corner at 19-17.  Pete then showed his class to pull out a wood with a touch of good fortune thrown in to take the end and lead out for game.

Pete wrapped it up at the next end for a well deserved win.

There were 5 qualifiers for the Derbyshire Merit so a play off was held for the 4 Qtr Final losers to fill the 5th place and J P Hall won through beating Alan Sherlock in the qualifying match.

The watching crowd enjoyed the bowling although I could have sworn that a certain county selector had trouble driving home due to some egg obscuring his vision…..
